Having a raised toilet seat available for a senior citizen is an indispensable way for seniors not only to maintain their independence but also to help in lowering the possibility of a nasty slip and fall.
And being that the bathroom is the most likely place for someone with mobility issues is to fall, it is important to do everything possible to make the most dangerous place in the house (beside the stairs) a little easier to manage.
To the right you can see my mother’s raised toilet seat. It has a few ‘safety first’ features that enable her to toilet safely:
1) You can see how the raised toilet seat lets her rest about 6” above where she would normally be sitting if she was actually sitting on the toilet seat itself. Getting up is much easier as a result.
2) Notice the side arms which allow her to use her both her arms and her legs in attempting to stand. What Mom does is raise herself with her arms and then uses her legs to get vertical.
(Note: I have seen raised toilet seats like these without the arms…but definitely wouldn’t recommend them. You want the extra support that comes with being able to use your arms as well as your legs to stand.
The only thing you want to be careful of is that the seat is properly secured to the toilet. Part of the seat will fit inside the ring of the upper bowl and then you can see the small screw on the front of the raised toilet seat which is used to lock the seat securely to the toilet.
Below in the carousel you can see an assortment of raised toilet seats that fit the safety requirements I outlined above…
