This past Saturday, there was an event at the Long Island State Veterans Home that I attended with the intention of gaining information to start a “Veterans” section to this website.
The Veterans home is located on the campus of the State University of NY at Stony Brook, and while I might talk about the services I found locally, I would encourage my readers to seek out similar resources in their local area to find your local Veterans
And being that Dad served in the Army from 1958 – 1962 these types of benefits are of interest to me personally…as well as professionally for all who I write for.
The Veterans Home Itself
Below is the fact sheet for all of the information about the Veterans home day care program…
It should also be noted that the facility also functions as a skilled nursing facility for long-term nursing home residents.
At the event there was a contingent of student dentists from the local dental college at Stony Brook there, and I had a chance to speak with them as well as get a free dental screening myself.
And while I was there the students not only showed me how to brush my teeth properly…
…but I also had a chance to speak with the students plus their supervisor about dental care for seniors, being that this is the most asked question I get (you can see the comments on my “Dentures and Dental Care” page for proof of that).
The dental school offers discounts for everyone of around 50% off of any service that you need.
Now, off of those already discounted prices there is an additional discount for veterans and gold star parents of 50%, so veterans experience a savings of around 75% off of their dental bills by doing through the dental school.
Also, the dental school does accept Medicaid as payment, although it should be noted that this is not an option in all states.
Free Health Screenings
At the event, there was the VA health bus on site giving free health screenings outside as well.
This bus does go to other sites, such as libraries and VFW halls, doing its thing providing free mobile health screenings for veterans. You can call the Veterans Home or the local VA hospital to find out where it will be.
