Today I am going to write about the Suffolk County Respite Care program.
I live in Suffolk County, NY (about an hour east of NY City for your reference) and while that may not help most of my readers throughout the country I write it because I am almost certain that there are similar programs where you are.
So as I go through the details the only thing that will probably change between the local program I describe and the program near you will probably be the contact information. And when I am done I will go on to explain how you can find out about similar programs in your area.

The fees for this service vary depending upon the ability of the caregiver to pay, so there is no set schedule and you may need to qualify financially in order to receive a reduced fee.
There are two types of respite care available through the program…
Brief Respite Care Program
This service is limited to a 4-hour period, where the caregiver will drop their loved one off in a supervised site to allow for a much deserved break.
Institutional And/Or Live-In Respite Services
This is offered through one specific nursing home here in Suffolk County, however, services can be provided in the residence of your loved one or you as the caregiver on a limited basis.
There are eligibility requirements involved (they have to medically qualify) and the service is only offered for a limited amount of time (5-7 days at most during a 12-month period) but this is available for those who need it to take a break or vacation from their caregiving responsibilities.
How Do I Find Out Such Services In My Area
My first stop would be to call the local Office of the Aging. They have to be able to answer if there are any sources of respite care like this in your area. In your area the name of the program might be slightly different, such as Division of Senior Services, but will fulfill the same function.
