I actually have been asked, “How do I find a Medicare-approved supplier for durable medical equipment?” (once it was a hospital bed and another time it was a more general question asked to me at a seminar I was giving).
And because I had never thoroughly investigated the question I felt that the time was right for me to do so now.
The reason that this information is so important is that Medicare will pay 80% of the “Medicare-approved amount” for any item that you have a medical necessity for.
Going to a supplier that is approved by Medicare guarantees that you will not have problems later with billing and having to pay more than you anticipated.
Video Overview of How to Find Medicare Approved Suppliers of Durable Medical Equipment
So, how do you go about finding them? As usual, the government has made a simple process more difficult than it should be, and that is why I have screenshots below to help you through the process…
Step 1: Go to the Supplier Directory on Medicare.gov
Once of the confusing things is that it appears that this website is not only for consumers looking for equipment but also suppliers looking to become part of the Medicare process. So what you are going to want to do is just plug your zip code in the box. I have highlighted it with the orange oval for easy viewing above.
Step 2: Pick The Equipment You Are Interested In
The confusion continues here. From the consumers perspective I have no idea why Medicare differentiates between competitive and non-competitive bidders when searching for suppliers. However, whatever the reason, you have to deal with it.
Anyway, for the purposes of this discussion I picked the hospital bed as this was one of the items I was specifically asked about.
And even though it isn’t on the screenshot you can scroll down and see dozens, perhaps hundreds of items to choose from.
You will need to scroll down anyway and click on the green “search” button in the lower right for you to get to the results page.
Step 3: See The Suppliers
And once you have entered your criteria you will then get to the results page, which has contact information and other information you need to get the item you need.
So that’s how to find a Medicare-approved supplier in your area.
